CODE EST2150

TITLE Conflict Resolution in Contemporary Conflicts

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

MQF LEVEL Not Applicable

ECTS CREDITS 4

DEPARTMENT European Studies

DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to introduce the student to the multi-disciplinary field of conflict resolution as it has developed since 1950, and to investigate how it applies to international conflict today. A central approach of conflict resolution is to encourage a problem-solving orientation to resolve violent conflict, and to combine theory and practice.

This unit will explore the evolution of the field of Conflict Resolution as a discipline in its own right. It will then look at the change in conflict typology that has occurred in the post-Cold War era, looking at the body of conflict resolution theory that has emerged in response. The study-unit will also look at the emergence of non-violent resistance as a means to an end.

Topics to be dealt with:
1) Gandhi and Non-Violence
2) The Cold War
3) Conflict theory
4) The development of CR as a discipline
5) Post-Cold War Conflict
6) Conflict Tracking
7) Conflict Resolution in Contemporary Conflict

Learning Outcomes:

At the end of this study-unit you should:
1) be acquainted with the nature of conflict resolution as a distinct theoretical and applied study field;
2) have an understanding of current thinking about how to analyse conflict with a view to devising best practice in war prevention, mitigation, settlement, and post-war reconstruction.
