DESCRIPTION The theories of European integration are essential for a better understanding the EU. The seminars in this study-unit focus on the main theories and political paradigms involved, such as federalism/federation, functionalism and neo-functionalism, inter-governmentalism and Liberal inter-governmentalism, multi-level polity and the new institutionalism. Some attention will also be given to old plans of EU integration from the 17th century onwards as well as the ‘visions’ of key European statesmen who have inspired the integration process.
