TITLE The European Union and its Mediterranean Neighbourhood

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 6

DEPARTMENT European Studies

DESCRIPTION The EU’s Mediterranean Neighbourhood is important to the Union in many ways. A number of conflicts in the region such as the Middle East Problem, the division of Cyprus and the Spanish Sahara threaten the region’s stability with the likelihood of spill over onto the EU itself. The region is of economic importance to the Union, the source of most of its energy. The Mediterranean environment is also important to the EU, climate change and the worsening water stress, the depletion of fish stocks and social problems such as migration make the Mediterranean situation one of the ‘hottest’ on the Union’s borders. This study-unit focuses on the main EU policies in the region, namely the EU Neighbourhood Policy (ENP), the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the EU’s approach to the so called ‘frozen conflicts’ in the region.
