Welcome to the Department of Primary Education
The Department of Primary Education currently consists of 11 full-time members of staff, all of whom are working and conducting research in a wide array of subjects and issues which are of importance in the fields of early childhood and primary education. The Department strives to provide high quality pre-service training for students who are predominantly interested in working with children from birth till the age of 11 together with continuous professional development through post-graduate programmes and in-service courses. Department members participate in national and international conferences, meetings, projects and committees to extend their contributions in the local and international spheres.
The Department aims at:
• preparing effective and competent teachers who can face challenges presented in diverse classroom contexts. This is done by evaluating and revisiting the programmes to ensure that the content and pedagogies are addressing the changing needs of society;
• Promoting University as a learning organisation where staff and students are encouraged to participate in a broad range of activities;
• Participating in and/or organising initiatives of national interest to raise awareness about particular issues, to inform and to disseminate research findings among practitioners and other stake holders;
• Establishing links with European and international colleagues and students through bilateral agreements; Erasmus exchanges; participation in and co-ordination of projects; international conferences and study visits.
