DESCRIPTION This study-unit explores the work of different theorists like Plato, Hume, Kant, Baumgarten, Dickie, Weitz, Danto, and others, as well as a range of areas in the history of aesthetics and contemporary theoretical issues such as art and morality, feminism, and essentialist and non-essentialist approaches to the definition of art. Students will engage in critical debates about questions related to the history of aesthetics, such as the problem of determining aesthetic criteria in the judgement of art. Aesthetics will be contextualised by making constant reference to the work of contemporary artists. The students will be examined on their ability to understand and reflect about the main issues in Art Theory.

Learning Outcomes:

- Students learn about different philosophers and art theorists who have discussed philosophical issues related to the arts.
- Students learn to discuss philosophical issues about art, using correct terminologies.
- Students learn to propose their own philosophical arguments about artistic issues.

ADDITIONAL NOTES Range of Acceptable Students:

Offered to B.Ed (Hons) Art students.

A Pass at Advanced Level at Grade C or better in Art or equivalent from a foreign university.

Only 10 students will be registered for this study-unit including B. Ed. Art students.
