DESCRIPTION This study-unit focuses on complex and challenging behaviours in the classroom, namely students with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Asperger’s Syndrome and Autism, school refusal, anxiety depression, and selective mutism. It examines the nature and causes of these conditions in children and young persons and how these impinge on school and classroom life. Students will develop the skills to support the learning and behaviour of these students within educational contexts through the use of psycho-educational strategies.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the study-unit participants should be able to develop the knowledge and skills in teaching and supporting the behaviour of students with various forms of SEBD, namely ADD/ADHD, Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome, school refusal, anxiety, depression, and selective mutism. More specifically they will be able to:
- comprehend the nature and causes of SEBD difficulties from a biospychosocial perspective
- develop the required competencies in teaching and supporting students with SEBD in inclusive classrooms
- organise behaviour support for such students on a one to one and small groups basis
- work collaboratively with school staff, parents and professionals in mobilising and coordinating behaviour support for these students at school level

Tentative Study-unit Outline:

- ADHD: the nature and causes of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder; the educational needs of students with ADHD; educational strategies to support the learning and behaviour of students with ADHD in inclusive settings
- Autism and Apsperger’s Syndrome: understanding autism and Asperger’s syndrome and the barriers they may constitute to learning; the educational needs of students with autism/Asperger’s syndrome meeting the educational needs of students with autism/Asperger’s syndrome
- School refusal: the nature and causes of school refusal; helping the child and young person return to school
- Depression in children: understanding depression in children; providing support to children and their carers
- Selective mutism: understanding selective mutism; psycho-educational interventions with children and young persons
