DESCRIPTION This study-unit intends to introduce students to the field of Learning Disabilities. Learning Disabilities is a relatively new field and people with Learning Disabilities are the largest population within the field of Disabilities, having been and still are being often mislabelled and misunderstood. The students will also be exposed to multi sensory techniques with regard to intervention and teaching techniques.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Define Learning Disabilities.
- Discuss Aetiology and Cognitive Difficulties.
- Explain Personality and Social Characteristics of profile of LD.
- Demonstrate an understanding of Assessment and Learning Disabilities.
- Define Dyslexia and Dyscalculia.
- Discuss the profile of ADhD as a related difficulty and within the context of co-morbidity.
- Demonstrate an understanding of Multi-sensory Techniques of Teaching Reading & Math.
- Explain how children with LD can access the Curriculum in the Classroom.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Write a child’s profile after observation at home, school, work and in the community.
- Critique curricula in light of LD profiles.
- Translate IEPS into inclusive intervention and teaching lesson plans.
- Explain Assessment reports.
