| DESCRIPTION | This study-unit aims at creating an awareness amongst the students that Celebrating Diversity creates an inclusive and richer society. The first part of the study-unit focuses on issues related to society in general while the second part deals with the development of the school as the basis of an inclusive community. The students will be introduced to various groups considered to be at the margin of our society. Lectures will be delivered by visiting lecturers considered to be in the forefront on human rights issues in our country. The study-unit is aimed at sensitizing students to the barriers faced by persons because of their perceived diversity. Students will also be exposed to ways in which we, as citizens in Malta, within our own little communities, can welcome every person in order to develop a heterogeneous and richer society. The second part of the study-unit focuses on the creation of Inclusive schooling which is seen as essential for the eradication of prejudice. Schools play an important role in the move towards including all people, with or without learning difficulties and or/disabilities, as FULL participants in community life. Educators, therapists should be taking the lead in this important area of social change. The successful inclusion of any child depends 80% on "others" (parents, teachers, facilitators, peers, support personnel) and 20% on the "child". All children belong to the school in general and to the class in particular. This study-unit aims at providing: A. Persons working with children with: (i) tools to analyze present school practices which hinder inclusion and those which facilitate the inclusion of all students celebrating diversity in solidarity. (ii) the understanding and rationale of working within a home and school based transdisciplinary team -orchestrating an IEP B. Persons working with people with diverse ability, religion, gender, sexual orientation and ethnic groups and mental health: the understanding and ability to respond to the needs of specific groups and the creation of inclusive communities Students will work on a project (4-5 students) and will be encouraged to use different media to present it.
