TITLE Planning and Pedagogy in Geography Education

UM LEVEL 05 - Postgraduate Modular Diploma or Degree Course

MQF LEVEL 7

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Mathematics and Science Education

DESCRIPTION This study-unit is designed as part of geography student teacher education but which sustains and stimulates throughout the career. It explores the relationship between planning and the quality of teaching and learning in the geography classroom.

The unit offers guidance on lesson planning to achieve the set objectives through the development of skills needed for this.

This is achieved by a consideration of what learning one wishes to take place and how lessons will facilitate this learning, but will go beyond simply structuring within the time limits available for lessons.

An extensive overview of teaching strategies as specifically applicable to geography education will be provided but always drawing away from simplistic notions of these and advocating the use of a variety of styles.

Consideration will also be given to the requirements of the curriculum, aspects of classroom management, how pupils learn in geography, which resources are needed and linking concepts with past and future lessons.

Study-Unit Aims:

- To highlight and explore the relationship between learning objectives, teaching strategies, learning activities and assessment in planning for teaching and learning in geography.
- To introduce student teachers to various teaching strategies and styles.
- To encourage the development of a personal response to the challenges of geography education within a fast-changing world.
