DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces student teachers into issues related to business education.

It helps students to reflect upon the theoretical and practical aspects related to curriculum development and the practice of teaching business education at secondary level. It provides an overview of school-related issues such as class management, motivation, and teaching and learning techniques in the business classroom.

It also helps to introduce students to skills involved in course design including the development of schemes of work, lesson planning and evaluating learners' performance.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit aims to:
- serve as an induction into the teaching profession,
- guide students to observe and reflect upon specific macro and micro learning environments,
- guide students to read, observe and reflect upon the learners, the process of learning and specific educational techniques, and
- immerse students into teaching methods through observation and hands-on teaching sessions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- critically analyse their school observations from practical and theoretical perspectives,
- identify learning outcomes and formulate specific objectives for lessons which encompass knowledge-based, skill-based and value-based targets,
- apply curricular theory to justify pedagogical and content-based decisions made in planning lessons, and
- describe diverse learning situations in business classrooms and come up with ways to address such situations.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- design tailormade courses in business subjects which may be required by specific situations at secondary level,
- plan related schemes of work taking into consideration aspects such as the age of the learners, their academic readiness, learning patterns and the school environment,
- write and evaluate lesson plans for a given business subject,
- investigate the importance of cultivating an appropriate learner-teacher relationship, and
- discuss, with reference to given case studies, strategies for handling particular classroom situations.
