| DESCRIPTION | Students are expected to organise an Individual Study Plan (ISP) in relation to their dissertation topic. Typically, the ISP includes self-directed study activities under the supervision of the course coordinator and thesis supervisor, and includes a range of activities such as critical book reviews, reporting outcomes of conferences or seminars related to the thesis, reflective journals on study visits abroad, attendance at post-graduate study units at the University of Malta or internationally. Various seminars will be organised both to guide students to prepare their work, as well as providing students the opportunity to present their work-in-progess. Study-unit Aims: 1. Help students focus on their thesis topic and commence exploratory work on it; 2. Provide a series of guided, self-study opportunities for students to engage with different aspects of their research project; 3. Organise seminars where students can discuss their work in progress, benefiting from feedback from senior researcheres and from peers. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Plan and implement a set of activities that are related to the research topic of the thesis, and build up to it; - Scan the environment for opportunities to deepen one's understanding of the research topic; - Organise knowledge gained from different sources in ways that facilitate critical reflection; - Plan a sequence of steps in organising a research project; - Draw on a range of theoretical frameworks discussed throughout the course in order to make critical reflections in a learning portfolio. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Draw up a meaningful Individual Study Plan; - Organise a learning pathway that is conducive to deeper understanding of a research area; - Make critical entries in a learning reflective portfolio; - Make presentations about research outcomes to senior researchers and peers and to defend methodological and conceptual positions adopted.
