Paper-based sketching and scribbling is a natural way of communicating ideas and concepts which would otherwise be difficult to express using only verbal or written communication. Since paper-based sketches may be drawn quickly, designers in variety of fields use sketches in the early idea development stages. Humans may at times underestimate the abilities of our visual system which enables us to filter and group the stroke information present in a scribbled drawing instantaneously. The scope of this research is to reproduce these abilities on a computer system, thus enabling the machine to extract the information present in a paper-based scribble. This has several useful applications and of particular interest is its application to rapid prototyping. By extracting a designer’s intended shape information, it is possible to transform the 2D flat scribble into a 3D virtual model. This allows industrial designers to explore design issues such as the functionality and aesthetics of a design concept. This research is carried out in collaboration with the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering and more information may be found at this research information site.
