DESCRIPTION 1. Classification of Materials;
Distinguish between Conductors, Semiconductors and Insulators

2. Conducting materials; General Properties and their applications.

3. Semiconducting materials; General Properties and their applications.

4. Insulating materials; General Properties and their applications.

5. Magnetic Materials
Types of magnetic materials, Ferromagnetic materials; General Properties and applications, Ferrimagnetic materials; General Properties and applications.

6. Optical Fibres.

Study-unit Aims:

The main objective of this study-unit is to give the students basic knowledge on the materials that electrical and electronic engineers may encounter in industry.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand charge behavior in different materials.
- Classify the materials based on energy band theory.
- Select suitable materials according to their electrical properties and the required application.
- Understand the difference between the various magnetic effects.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Evaluate and characterise electrical properties of a materials.
- Select suitable materials according to their electrical properties and the application at hand.
- Distinguish between the various magnetic effects and their respective applications.
- Understand the response to electric and magnetic fields of conductors, semiconductors and insulators.
- Research and obtain information on specified topics.
