TITLE Electrical Machines

DESCRIPTION Three Phase Synchronous Machine: Determination of parameters, operation with local loads, synchronous motors.

Three Phase Induction Motor: Equivalent circuit, power balance equations, torque and power calculations, determination of circuit parameters.

The DC Machine: Armature reaction and commutation process, performance characteristics, shunt, series, and compound motors, speed control, losses and efficiency.

Power transformers: Detailed equivalent circuits, voltage regulation and efficiency, separation of loss components, temperature variation with loading, parallel operation, specialized three phase connections.

Study-unit Aims:

This unit covers in depth the principles of operation of the most commonly used electrical machines. The unit deals with steady-state operation of the synchronous motor, the induction motor and the dc machine. The operation of power transformers is also discussed in detail.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Explain the principles of operation of electrical rotating machines.
- Understand the equivalent circuit for these machines and how the equivalent circuit parameters can be measured experimentally.
- Understand the operating characteristics of rotating machines.
- Explain the power loss mechanisms of rotating machines and power transformers.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Perform calculations relating to the steady-state operation of rotating machines including torque developed, speed and efficiency.
- Perform calculations relating to steady–state transformer operation including voltage regulation, efficiency and temperature variation
- Determine the correct test conditions to identify equivalent circuit parameters of rotating machines and transformers based on name-plate data.
