DESCRIPTION - Symmetrical Components and Unbalanced Faults: Definition of Symmetrical Components; Derivation of Sequence Circuits for Plant Components; Unbalanced faults.
- Power System Stability: Synchronous Generator Control Loops; Steady State Stability; Transient Stability.
- Current and Voltage Transformers: Construction; Applications; Equivalent Circuit; Operation; Errors; Operation under Fault currents; Effect of core saturation on behaviour; Terminology and specifications.
- Circuit Breakers: Theory of Circuit Breaking; Ratings; Effect of Network Parameters on CB Operation; Practical Circuit Breakers.
- Power System Voltage Surges: Over-voltages experienced by the power system; Over-voltage tests; Protection against over-voltages; Insulation Coordination; Propagation of surges; Bewley Lattice Diagram.

Study-unit Aims:

To further enhance the understanding of Electric Power Systems: Analysis of plant, transmission and distribution Systems under unbalanced and transient conditions.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Explain the principles of transient operation of synchronous generators.
- Understand how to use the symmetrical component method in power systems.
- Understand current transformers and voltage transformers used for protection.
- Explain the operation of circuit breakers used for protection in power systems.
- Explain voltage surges in power systems.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Perform calculations related to unsymmetrical three phase faults in power systems.
- Perform calculations and analysis related to transient stability of synchronous generators in power systems.
- Calculate voltage surges in power systems.
- Calculate the ratings of CTs and VTs used for protection systems.
