Study-unit Aims:

To learn about modern industrial power electronics converters and their control. An introduction to Power Quality Factors and standards and the effect of Non-Linear Power electronic loads on electrical distribution harmonics.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Explain operation of inverter circuits: square-wave, quasi-square-wave and pulse-width modulated inverters and associated control logic;
- Understand ac output and dc link switching harmonics associated with inverter circuits;
- Understand motivation for resonant switching and resonant converter circuits;
- Explain operation of basic zero-voltage switching circuit and analyse SRSL and SRPL resonant converters;
- Explain harmonic and distortion effects of rectifier circuits.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Predict harmonic effects at ac output of inverter circuits and select suitable switching frequency and switching devices to reduce filter component sizes;
- Perform calculations related to resonant converters based on Fundamental Mode Approximation;
- Determine compliance of rectifier circuits with harmonic emission regulations.
