TITLE Electromechanical Drives

UM LEVEL 03 - Years 2, 3, 4 in Modular Undergraduate Course

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Electrical Engineering

DESCRIPTION Electric drive system and characteristics:
Concept and classification of Electric drive systems (EDS). Differences in mechanical characteristics of electric motors. Mechanical characteristics of loads and load diagrams. Steady-state and steady-state stability of EDS. Dynamics and dynamic stability of EDS. Mechanical transient in EDS.

Four-quadrant operation of DC machines:
Theoretical background of four-quadrant operation of separately excited dc machine (SEDCM). Starting, stopping, reversing, braking and design of speed control for SEDCM.

Single-phase machines and their operational characteristics:
Induction, Universal, Repulsion Motors

Selection and rating of electric motors:
Working and environmental conditions. Torque consideration. Thermal considerations. Thermal transients under continuous duty, intermittent duty and short-time duty. Overload and rating of electric motors under variable loads.

Study-unit Aims:

To consolidate the theoretical knowledge of electrical machines, introduce the study of dynamics of electrical drives and to develop a system approach in the application of electrical machines in industrial electric drive systems.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand mechanical characteristics of electric motors and their loads.
- Understand and analyse steady-state and dynamic behaviour of electrical drive system.
- Explain and analyse dynamic behaviour of separately excited dc machine.
- Understand operation of single-phase motors.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Design control for separately excited dc motor to meet dynamic performance specification.
- Select suitable type of motor and rating according to application requirements.
