TITLE Automatic Control Systems 1

UM LEVEL 02 - Years 2, 3 in Modular Undergraduate Course

ECTS CREDITS 5

DEPARTMENT Systems and Control Engineering

DESCRIPTION • Introduction to Control Systems Engineering
    - Open and closed loop systems: Example of practical automatic control systems. Concept of system order, stability, response, accuracy.

• Linear Systems Modelling
    - Block diagram representation of systems in s-domain, open and closed-loop relationships, unity feedback. Signal flow diagram representation of systems. Modelling of linear system elements: electrical, mechanical, electro-mechanical, thermal, fluid, electro-mechanical analogy

• Linear Control Systems Analysis
    - Time domain response of 1st and 2nd order systems: System response dependence on poles, damping, natural/damped frequency of oscillations, response to a step input.
    - The servomechanism as a practical control system: Position control, speed control, derivative feedback and introduction to concepts of integral and PID control.

Study-unit Aims:

This study-unit introduces the basic concepts systems modelling and of automatic control systems covering the analysis of linear time-invariant feedback control systems via classical control theory.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- explain the advantages of closed loop over open loop systems
- compare the behaviours of first order and higher order systems
- explain the oscillatory, stable or unstable behaviour of physical systems though the use of Laplace modelling and classical control theory.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to, given a physical linear dynamic system:
- derive the correct transfer function model describing its behaviour in s-domain
- represent the system as both a block diagram and a signal flow graph
- predict the system's time domain behaviour to various inputs
