| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit starts by introducing to the student the concept of placement, and by highlighting what is expected from each participant in terms of efforts and outcomes (2 hour lecture). Students are then assigned a place of work where they have to carry out 112 hours of placement, equivalent to eight (8) hours per week for the 14 weeks of the regular academic semester. The total of 112 hours can be divided in either 1 full day of work per week (8 hours), or two half-days (4 hours each) per week, according to the needs of both students and entities hosting the placement. It is understood that the entities offering the placements will have to sign an agreement with the EDRC, called the ‘Placement Agreement’. The schedule of the placements shall not overlap with the university timetable. The placement has to be conducted in Malta, unless specifically stated. A mentor from the entity hosting the placement is to be appointed for each student. The role of the mentor is to assist the student to develop and enhance practical knowledge in the area of European studies. A member of the academic staff of the EDRC shall also be appointed, in order to follow both practical and academic aspects of the placements. The students shall be assigned a specific task by the entity hosting the placement. This task shall be reviewed and approved by the academic staff at the EDRC and named the ‘learning agreement’. The tasks assigned to each student have to be completed by the end of the placement period, unless specifically stated by the entity hosting the placements. The students shall keep a logbook where they have to summarise the activities carried out daily, together with a description of the learning experience. This logbook shall be sent to the selected academic staff at the EDRC for a mid-way review. Placements are open only to Bachelor in European Studies/Honours students. The number of places available will be announced every year and there might not be enough for all students applying for them. Applicants will be ranked according to a set of selection criteria based on their academic performance, similar to those used for the ERASMUS programme. Study-unit Aims: • To complete a work related task assigned by the entity hosting the placement; • To produce a logbook inclusive of daily work records and learning experiences; • To produce an overall report describing the work conducted; • To improve the students’ skills in relation to administrative work. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • demonstrate an understanding of the dynamics of work environment; • experience at first-hand the way in which public and private entities dealing with European issues work and operate; • gain experience in carrying out administrative work related to European studies; • conduct supervised work through which the student will be introduced to the world of work. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: • practice effective verbal communication skills; • learn and have the opportunity to practice life skills - such as assertiveness, working with others, taking responsibility for their own actions; • provide detailed written accounts of their day-to-day activities at the place of work. | ADDITIONAL NOTES | Placements are limited and are open only to Bachelor in European Studies Honours students. If there are more applicants than the number of placements available, students will be ranked according to academic merit and performance during an interview. EST2223 is also offered to those third year Bachelor of European Studies Honours students who were on Erasmus Programme during the second semester of the second year.
