DESCRIPTION The objective of this study-unit is to study Regional Economics and Regional Policy in the European Union, particularly structural and cohesion funds. The first part of the study-unit introduces economic theories used to analyse how regional disparities emerge and why they persist over time. In the second study-unit part, the role of regional policy intervention is addressed with particular focus placed on regional policy instruments. The third part of the study-unit adopts a direct EU perspective, structured around the implementation and management of EU structural and cohesion funds.

Study-unit Aims:

The objective of this study-unit is to provide students with a thorough foundation in regional economic analysis and the workings of EU regional policy.

An additional objective of the study-unit is to provide students with a solid theoretical, as well as practical, background to understand the basic economic and policy principles that underlie the implementation and management of EU structural and cohesion funds.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Define regions;
- Identify regional disparities;
- Apply economic models that can be used to explain regional disparities;
- Identify causes for regional economic disparities;
- Describe policy instruments applied to counteract regional economic disparities;
- Identify economic effects of various regional policy instruments;
- Describe the objectives of European Union structural and cohesion funds;
- Identify EU regional policy objectives.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Explain why economic disparities prevail across European regions;
- Analyse the EU regional policy debate from a regional economic perspective;
- Assess tools for the implementation, management and evaluation of EU regional policy.
