The theoretical foundations of this study-unit are also useful in the study of the EU in world politics.

Study-unit Aims:

The main aim is to instruct students on the theories of International Relations and Foreign Policy Analysis so that they can better appraise the national foreign policies of the member states and apply them in other courses taught in year three such as the Common Foreign and Security Policy and the External Relations of the EU.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- apply the theories of IR/FPA to the analysis of national foreign policies,
- understand the nexus connecting the EU's emerging and still fragile foreign policy and national foreign policies and how the latter impinge upon the former,
- understand the extent of the Europeanization of national foreign policies in the EU member states and how this affects the way member states behave in world politics,
- comprehend the processes, narratives and theoretical frameworks that are used in the formation of contemporary policies.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- use the skills and knowledge acquired to analyze at some depth the foreign policies of the EU member states,
- use such skills to analyze the foreign policies of other states outside the EU, to undertake research and analysis of a substantially good quality. These skills when acquired will also serve other study-units which deal with international relations.
