| DESCRIPTION | During the second semester of the second year a candidate shall submit to the Director a title and an outline proposal of a dissertation and the name of the resident member of the full-time academic staff of the EDRC who has been consulted, or any visiting part-time staff member who has taught in this course or in some circumstances, after consulting the Director of the EDRC, may also be put in contact with a member of the Academic staff of the University with a Council appointment according to his/her specialization, for the approval of the Board. The candidate is to select a title for the dissertation which is in the area of European Studies and which falls under one or more disciplines of this course, namely politics, economics and law. Every dissertation presented for the degree shall be work of an original nature. The dissertation must be between 10,000 and 15,000 words long including footnotes but excluding the bibliography. The dissertation shall be presented in such a format and be submitted in such number of copies as the Board may direct. Consult the updated guidelines and rules on the dissertation on https://www.um.edu.mt/edrc/dissertations Study-unit Aims: This study-unit aims to : train students to research and write a long essay / dissertation. It helps the students improve their writing skills since they have to work within the strict confines of the selected methodology and other requirements. Learning Outcomes: 1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Research and write to the required length and in a coherent and logical sequence on any subject within his/her competence. 2. Skills: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to: - Develop a research question; - Develop a research methodology to be employed in the analysis of the subject at hand; - Write in a logical and coherent manner on the chosen subject; - Assess and analyze various propositions and order them; - Analyze research data, events and present them in a coherent manner; - Improve the writing style; - Develop those skills which will be required later on in researching topics and writing about them; - Draw valid conclusions from the research findings. Further works may be added from time to time as needed. |
