Interdisciplinary Nature

Public policy is interdisciplinary in nature; it is affected by social and economic conditions, political as well as cultural values, and the structure of local, national and supranational governing institutions. The study of public policy requires the integration of knowledge from multiple disciplines to understand and critically assess common challenges and potential solutions.
Through the strategic contribution of its academic and business partners, the Department of Public Policy draws upon their knowledge and experience that is usually available, including European affairs, economics, sociology, management, and political science. Only through a coordinated exposure to these fields can a student understand how they interact in the world of public policy.
Furthermore, the European dimension in each and every aspect of national and local policy affairs is prevailing and, thus, our programmes also call students to familiarise themselves with the governing institutions of the
European Union, together with an understanding of the impact of EU legislation, policies, schemes and projects in all aspects pertaining to Maltese policy making.
