DESCRIPTION The course is a general introduction to the business of banking. The objective of this course is to familiarize students with the main topics related to the management of banks in the modern financial services industry. Students will get an overview of banks and their services as well as banking regulation issues. Financial management issues related to banks will also be covered.

Study-Unit Aims:

The study-unit aims at providing participants with an introductory course on banking. It provides a background on all the aspects related to banking, including what banks do, how are banks regulated, the different types of banks, risks in banking and how to manage them. It is structured over fourteen lectures of two hours each. By offering this credit, the Banking and Finance Department of the University of Malta is confident that its graduates will be well equipped to study other more in-depth courses related to banking

The Banking and Finance Department’s study-unit on banking is unique. It is designed for students who would like to pursue a career in financial services. The Banking study-unit provides detailed knowledge together with practical skills so that students are able to fulfill their responsibilities more efficiently and effectively once they embark on their profession. By drawing upon international best practice, it helps prepare students to adapt to the modern financial services practitioners’ environment.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Explain the theories of why banks exist;
2. Name the various types of banks;
3. Explain the rationale of banking regulation;
4. List the risks to which banks are exposed;
5. Describe how risks are managed in banks;
6. Identify the main issues that banks managers face on a day-to-day basis.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Estimate the risks that a typical bank is exposed to;
2. Rank banks in terms of profitability and risk profiles;
3. Compare the safety of banks;
4. Evaluate bank strategies;
5. Distinguish different banking rules;
6. Assess the challenges that modern banks face.
