DESCRIPTION This unit aims at presenting an introduction to the main theories of international trade, the effects of barriers to trade and other protectionist policies, and the international mobility of labour and capital. The role of regional and international institutions is also covered, as well as selected topics in open economy macroeconomics

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Identify the benefits of free trade and the problems with protectionism;
- Identify the policy implications regarding migration, foreign direct investment, regional integration and the balance of payments.

2. Skills
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Analyse the economic efficiency of policies which encourage trade and resource movements;
- Evaluate methods and strategies supporting policies which lead to more engagement with the world economy.
