DESCRIPTION The objective of the course is to introduce participants to the economic, social, political and public policy dimensions of a number of major social and economic issues which are of current relevance to the development of Malta within the EU and global frameworks. Participants will be invited to engage in critical reflection on national and EU policies and service provision in a number of areas as well as to explore their own attitudes towards certain dilemmas in the social and economic spheres. The ultimate aim of the course is to provide a deeper insight into major outstanding and unresolved issues within the social, economic and political debate.

Study-unit Aims

- To help students realize the potential academic contribution towards the analysis and solution of practical socio-economic problems

- To encourage students to view practical problems and issues from an interdisciplinary perspective

- To enable students to find areas of common and divergent approaches between different fields of study

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- recognize different aspects of major socio-economic problems and issues affecting Malta

- recognize that academic study can offer approaches to analyse and solve practical socio-economic problems

- appreciate the potential role which different disciplines can offer in this regard

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- undertake more objective and critical assessments of socio-economic issues

- better evaluate the validity of arguments presented in national socio-economic debate
