DESCRIPTION The study-unit introduces the different methods of data collection and analysis, as well as probability, random variables, measures of location and variation, discrete and continuous distributions. Students also cover introduction to sampling theory, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing.

Study-Unit Aims:

This study-unit introduces students to quantitative techniques and data analysis in a business context. The importance of computers and relevant applications are also covered.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Understand the difference between different measures of location;
- Understand the difference between different measures of variation;
- Understand the difference between different plots and charts;
- Understand the most important fundamentals of probability;
- Understand the importance of random variables;
- Understand the difference between discrete and continuous distributions.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- Calculate different measures of location and variation;
- Construct various charts and graphs;
- Work out a number of core examples related to probability theory;
- Calculate the mean and the variance from a probability distribution;
- Use various distributions to calculate probability values.
