DESCRIPTION This study-unit lays the foundation for the study of management as a logically structured professional discipline. It explores managements’ underlying functions and premises, its relevance to organisations, as well as the needs managers must address. The spectrum of management thought from early theory to recent management concepts are discussed with reference to modern managerial approaches. The internal and external environments that affect and challenge the practice of management are defined, and the concept of organisations as ‘open systems’ introduced. Stakeholders are treated and other societal issues related to an organisation’s function, are explored. The main issues considered are; Defining Management, Managers and Organisations, Differentiating managerial roles and responsibilities, The key functions of management, Competencies and skills for effective management, The changing context of managerial work, The evolution of management thought, Dimensions and implications of an organisation’s environment.

Study-unit Aims:

- To introduce students to the principles of management;
- To provide a grounding in a wide range of management theories;
- To emphasize the multi-faceted nature of management.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Define management and explain how management differs according to organizational level;
- Demonstrate an understanding of the range of activities carried out in a managerial role;
- Evaluate the concepts and theories related to good management practice.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Identify and explain key management theories;
- Describe and appreciate the role of the four management functions;
- Discuss and identify the implications of wider management issues such as diversity, ethics and globalization.
