DESCRIPTION This unit presents the fundamental management knowledge required for managers in logistics and transport industry. It covers aspects of the internal and external structures of an organisation, the governance of the people within the organisation and those resources needed to maintain organisational health. it aims to deliver the understanding and competence of those key elements of management practice which are fundamental for both private and public organisations operating in the transport and logistics sector.

Study-unit Aims

The aim of this study unit is to serve as an introduction to the course in that it provides an outline of the logistics and transportation sector both from a Maltese and in particular an international perspective. Recent and future developments will be analysed and discussed. It assesses the internal and external factors that impact the operations of transportation and logistics organisations. It provides an insight into the managerial competencies required for the management of logistics and transportations operations.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Know the implications of different organisational structures and evaluation of use;
2. Assess the implications of flexible organisations and work practices;
3. Understand the processes for planning, controlling and decision-making;
4. Identify the factors influencing organisational goals, objectives and culture;
5. Describe the implications of the external environment on organisations;
6. Assess the requirements for successful internal and external communications;
7. Describe the role of information technology;
8. Identify the implications of business practices on customers;
9. Compare the interelationships of different elements of logistics;
10. Describe the techniques and models to analsye marketing needs;
11. Identify the implications of integrating transport modes;

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

3. Plan and control departmental activities;
4. Identify and evaluate information for planning and decision making;
