DESCRIPTION This study unit looks at a range of qualitative and quantitative methods. It examines the design and implementation of qualitative research projects, including the formulation of research questions and the analysis of qualitative data. The quantitative data analysis shall cover measurement, analysis of univariate information, contingency tables, some fundamentals of statistical theory, sampling and testing of hypotheses.

Study-unit Aims

The main aim of this study unit is to provide an understanding of the basic research tools to students to design coherent research designs and carry out research projects by adopting different research methods.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- understand the logic, concepts and epistemologies associated with qualitative and quantitative methodologies, and the relationship of these to research design and outcomes;
- become familiar with the range of qualitative and quantitative methods available to researchers, both practically and critically.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

- understand the possibilities and problems associated with the collection or use of alternative kinds of data in qualitative and quantitative research;
- identify the best research methods that fit different research topics and projects.
