DESCRIPTION This study-unit centres around management communication theories which provide managers with models and techniques to master communication in the workplace. Students will acknowledge that there is a large body of knowledge supporting how effective communication in organisations can be achieved through an integrated communication strategy. The areas covered in this study-unit will familiarize the students with the complexity of communication where issues of process, ethics, culture and policy intertwine. During this study-unit students will be involved in critiquing organisational and individual communication practices; and identifying effective communication strategies.

Study-unit Aims:

- To introduce students on how managers in contemporary organisations manage effective communication;
- To make students aware of the contextual range of methods of communication;
- To explore how managers tailor their communication strategies to target their audience.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand the key elements of the communication process;
- Appreciate the range of resources associated with good management communication practice.
- Consolidate their awareness of the communication techniques which are managerial tools in contemporary organisations.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Appreciate the different forms of communication and be aware of their effectiveness;
- Identify barriers to communication and propose strategies for their avoidance;
- Plan and effectively implement a communications strategy.
