DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the characteristics of contemporary organisations. The subjects covered in this unit will help them become familiar with the complexity of their position as responsible managers at various organisational levels. It will prepare them to be effective managers in a rapidly changing environment. The main issues considered are the concept of organisations, the challenges of complex environments, organisational planning, and managerial qualitative and quantitative decision tools.

Study-unit Aims:

1. To introduce the students to develop an understanding of how contemporary organisations are effectively managed.
2. To make students aware of the dilemmas associated with the management of organisations.
3. To explore appropriate planning and decision making modelling mechanisms within a changing environment.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Understand the characteristics of organisations as systems;
Appreciate the tensions and dilemmas associated with managing organisations;
Consolidate the concepts, models, and techniques which are the disposal of managers in a rapidly changing world.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Use a wide range of skills to work as managers in complex and challenging environments;
Effectively implement change in order to align organisations with their environments;
Contextualize the management of organisations through the development of appropriate plans.
