DESCRIPTION This study-unit introduces students to the principles and practices of management accounting. It will provide a theoretical perspective by considering the purposes of generating management accounting information. Students will learn management accounting concepts and techniques by looking at their role as managers, to provide appropriate information for economic decision-making, organisational control and performance evaluation. It offers students an opportunity to study the subject from a conceptual standpoint. In this context the study-unit will include consideration of more recently developed techniques of costing, budgeting, and capital expenditure.

Study-unit Aims:

1. Students will appreciate the contribution that financial and management accounting makes to the effective operation of a business.
2. To make students aware of the dilemmas associated with the management of organisations.
3. To explore appropriate planning mechanisms within a changing environment.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Understand the nature of costs and the role of accounting data;
Appreciate how income effects different costing methods;
Develop an understanding of cost behaviour and cost estimation.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Evaluate, apply and discuss concepts in management accounting;
Analyse and evaluate accounting data;
Critically comment and communicate financial data effectively.
