DESCRIPTION This study-unit provides students with an understanding of the functions, structures, objectives and plans of the Operations Unit within organizations. It will give students both a theoretical and practical understanding of how operations can be managed effectively in the light of external and internal conditions and requirements. The subjects covered will equip students with a framework for understanding production and operations management as activities within the context of a firm’s overall competitiveness. The topics covered are as follows; The nature and function of operating systems, capacity management, scheduling procedures, inventory management, location and facility layout, quality management, and maintenance.

Study-unit Aims:

Students will learn to appreciate the importance of operations as a central process in any organisation. They will learn techniques and models which are utilized by operations managers in various industries.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Critically appraise the role and contribution of the operations functions in an organisation;
Develop knowledge on a structured approach for understanding the operations function of an organisation;
Acquire the tools and techniques operations managers use to develop efficient and effective organisations.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Think in a structured way about the importance of operations management in an organisation;
Apply basic techniques for improving the operations of an organisation;
Critically evaluate the primary and secondary roles of an operations manager in a particular context.
