DESCRIPTION This study-unit aims to make the student more conversant with the practical aspects of Human Resource Management and Development. Students will learn to appreciate that different organisations require a different and diverse human resource approach.

The main areas approached in this study-unit concern critical issues in human resource management, human resource strategies, and the recruitment and selection processes which occur in firms. Furthermore, students will acquire knowledge in manpower planning and succession planning, job analysis and evaluation frameworks, human performance management and reward schemes.

Study-unit Aims:

1. An informed and critical understanding of the role of human resources within an organisational context.
2. To familiarise the students with the link between HRM and organisational performance.
3. To help students develop an understanding of the role HR plays in managing employee well-being.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Understand the inter-relationship between HR practices and workers at an individual and collective level;
Understand the type of issues that forms basic activities in human resource management;
Understand how various organisational models can be applied for the development of human resources.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Define the concept of human resource management and deduce its objectives in modern organisations;
Express how different aspects of HRM are put into practice within organisations;
Evaluate HRM strategies in changing environments.
