DESCRIPTION The study-unit examines the function and developmental challenge of business information systems. It identifies the importance of IT in business and its significance for managers. Dealing with information and data management the study-unit focuses on the strategic role of information in enterprises. The main areas covered include the types of information systems and strategy, privacy and information security, relational database design, resource planning systems, and cloud computing.

Study-unit Aims:

- To provide students with a basic understanding of Management Information Systems for business with an emphasis on information management;
- To provide skills for the application of Management Information systems solutions in business challenges;
- To make students aware of emerging Information Systems applications and associated business models.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the various types of information systems used in business organisations;
- Recognize the key organisational issues related to information systems and technology;
- Define and evaluate information systems that support managerial decision-making at different levels within an organisation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Appraise the necessity for information systems in organisations;
- Assess through the use of frameworks the business value of digital technologies;
- Evaluate critically new ways of enhancing decision-making by deploying business intelligence competency.
