DESCRIPTION This study-unit establishes the recognized view that business processes are influenced by their strategic, organizational and environmental contexts. Organisational complexity and market uncertainty often result in a strong challenge for the effective management of strategic direction. The study-unit equips students with an understanding and critical appreciation of the processes involved in the formation and subsequent management of a strategic organisational direction. The main areas covered include the organisation's strategic context, theories of strategic success, strategic choice, strategic planning and implementation.

Study-unit Aims:

- To develop an understanding of the strategic concerns of firms;
- To appreciate the rationale behind the successful management fo strategic direction;
- To appreciate organisational complexity.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand, at appropriate levels, the impact of process issues on organisational strategic intent;
- Establish an understanding of the relationship between the external and internal context of an organisation, and its impact on strategic direction;
- Establish an appreciation of organisational complexity.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Apply theories, concepts and frameworks from strategic management to make sense of organisational decision-making, and to contribute effectively to it;
- Assess and choose strategic choices through the synthesis of complex information;
- Contribute effectively to the effective implementation of strategic direction choice.
