DESCRIPTION Organization Development (OD) and Change Management is a process that applies behavioural science knowledge and practices to help organizations achieve greater effectiveness, including increased financial performance and improved quality of work life. OD and change management differs from other planned change efforts such as technological innovation, training and development or new product development, because the focus is on building the organization’s ability to assess its current functioning and to achieve its goals. Moreover, OD is oriented to improving the total system – the organization and its parts in the context of the larger environment that affects them. Indeed, an understanding of OD and change management is an asset to all those involved in organizational life.

This study-unit provides a thorough understanding of the principles and implications of OD and change management and extends this understanding by challenging students to think critically and deeply about implications related to change programmes through the use of case studies and class discussions.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of this unit are threefold. First, it aims to help students understand the need for organisational development within the public and private sectors. To this effect, it projects change management from a critical perspective rather than from the traditional prescriptive mode. Second, it seeks to develop a skills portfolio that is crucial to lead successful change management programmes and sustainable organisational redevelopment. These skills are considered fundamental in securing effective governance. Third, it assist students to evaluate the existing frameworks and schemes designed for organisational change in contemporary times characterized by constant transformations. Such an organisational and self-appraisal culture helps students to assess regularly the adequacy of change management tools and mechanisms.
