DESCRIPTION This study-unit is centred around three important inter-related units followed by the students in the Operations Management and Management Science areas - namely Operations Research, Operations and Supply Chain Management, and Managerial Decision Modelling. It addresses the practical aspect of the theories, models, and frameworks covered in the previous units. It presents the student with the practice of how successful firms achieve efficient and effective (i) internal operational processes, and (ii) external upstream and downstream supply chain networks. Knowledge of how firms achieve competitive advantage through operations in their chosen industry market is specifically covered in detail.

During the course of their lectures students will be addressed by guest speakers who are professionals and practitioners in the field of Commerce, Enterprise an students d Industry. These individuals will provide students with insights on the following areas:
- Mapping of Institutions, Unions, business associations in Malta, Relationship between various stakeholders, role of EU and directives;
- Competitive Advantage in the retail industry;
- Competitiveness in relations to costs, skills, innovation, and quality;
- Competitiveness in Manufacturing and Strategic Direction;
- The specific challenge of family businesses in Malta;
- Internationalization.

Study-unit Aims:

- To bridge the gap between academic theories and real world business practice;
- To make students aware of the role and scope of Institutions, Unions, and business associations.
- To expand students' understanding of economic, political, legal, environmental and cultural concerns and barriers that affect business growth and expansion;
- To give students the opportunity to gain insights into the effective manner in which firms and family business in Malta adopt competitive advantage and establish strategic direction;
- To make students aware of the ever changing challenges in the business sector;
- To get students involved in reflexive thinking and discussion on a specific area of interest to them.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Understand how the inter-related theories in the management of business operations are applied in practice;
- Recognize how the development of appropriate operations systems enhance overall business objectives and establish competitive advantage;
- Appreciate the advantages and disadvantages of contextualizing the various models, and frameworks in Operations Management and Management Science;
- Understand the specific operational challenges faced by small businesses in the global economy.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate an appreciation of the role of operations and supply chain management both at a firm's strategic level, and for the effective production of goods and services;
- Demonstrate an ability to effectively apply Management Science models and frameworks in various business contexts;
- Demonstrate an ability to relate operations strategy to broader concepts of business covered in other study-units in the course;
- Integrate the concepts covered in the Operations Management and Management Science study-units and relate them to current real-world organisational scenarios.
