DESCRIPTION Students will acquire knowledge of the law relating to general commercial practice as well as the law relating to the various aspects of company law and industrial legislation. They will appreciate the reason why law is so important and how it impinges on their professional careers as well as learning of their responsibilities at law as managers.

Emphasis will be made on the various situations which require a knowledge of the law in order that they be confronted correctly. Three main areas are covered in detail in this study-unit:

(a) General legal issues related to company law and industrial legislation and how these issues affect the manager;
(b) Legal Issues relating to company law and how managers should deal with these issues in a correct legal manner including the way managers should face situations of company bankruptcy; and
(c) Industrial Law and the obligations which the law imposes on managers in this sphere, all within the wider context of linking the material to possible practical situations potentially faced by managers, as well as issues relating to various EU directives in relation to employment.

Study-unit Aims:

To give students an understanding of the legal issues involved in managing organisations as well to make them aware of the legal obligations and challenges which they are likely to face in their professional careers in as far as these effect companies and the employment scene, besides providing them with the necessary tools to confront these challenges in both the corporate as well as employment scene.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be:
- knowledgeable of areas relating to Corporate and Industrial Legislation with a direct bearing on management issues;
- in a position to help their organisation to be as fully compliant as possible with the legal requirements imposed on it by local and EU legislation.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to understand the legal issues relating to Corporate and Industrial legislation involved in the performance of their duties as managers.
