DESCRIPTION The study-unit provides an overall understanding of entrepreneurship and prepares students to start and succeed in business. Entrepreneurship is approached as a way of thinking, of behaving, and as an attitude The students will learn that entrepreneurship is a manageable process that can be applied in all organisational contexts. The main focus of this unit is the link between evolving entrepreneurship and the sustainable business.

Emphasis is made on how entrepreneurs evaluate the external environment of businesses in order to identify gaps in the marketplace and then to apply critical driving forces to draw-up a sustainable feasibility plan. The main issues revolve around the nature and context of entrepreneurship, the business concept, and new venture feasibility planning.

Students will also be required to develop a new venture of their own which will give them a first-hand experience of the way businesses come into being and the factors associated with their success.

Study-unit Aims

1. The unit offers a framework for understanding the entrepreneurial process.
2. It exposes students to issues faced by an entrepreneur who ventures into a new business.
3. It prepares students for the role of the entrepreneur in society and the ethical dilemmas they might encounter.

Learning Outcomes

1. Knowledge & Understanding: By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

1. Understand the process nature of entrepreneurship.
2. Develop an appreciation for opportunity and learn to recognize gaps in the market.
3. Appraise the nature of creative new business ideas that can be turned into sustainable business ventures.

2. Skills (including transferable [generic] skills): By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Recognize the entrepreneurial potential in themselves.
