DESCRIPTION This study-unit explores the philosophy, meaning and practice of Human Resource Development as distinct from the traditional understanding and provision of training in organizations. Participants are exposed to a deeper understanding of the deliberate and planned interventions to develop people in line with the strategic positioning of their respective organisations with a view to maximise organizational output and effectiveness.

Study-unit Aims:

To identify and re-examine effective HRD intervention in work organizations operating under conditions characterized by ever increasing fast changes and uncertainty.

To strengthen participants' awareness of the link between people development and change interventions using employee involvement as a backdrop to analyze varying levels of intervention.

To equip practicing managers with effective tools for the continuous provision of education, training and development across organizational levels.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Distinguish between education, training and development as inter-related approaches to people development in organizations;

Acknowledge the limitations of the traditional systematic training model and understand the complementary yet indispensable learning interventions and the creation of a learning organisational climate.

2. Skills:
By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

Activate a multi-level strategic approach to HRD in their respective organizations through the implementation of effective change and developmental processes that are congruent with the realities of the organization and the environment within which it operates;

Use diagnostic tools to select effective HRD strategies and tools compatible with the current organizational structure and operating systems;

Develop processes and practices to increase the degree of effectiveness of employee development and involvement under environmental realities characterized by turbulence and uncertain futures.
