DESCRIPTION Rationale & Learning Objectives:

This study-unit aims to introduce students to the topic of Financial Management, more particularly to the various sources from where a business can procure funds; and how such funds can best be invested in capital projects and working capital, and then managed properly in order to maximise shareholders’ wealth.

Indicative Syllabus & Study-unit Outline:

The study-unit is intended to help the student understand how to help maximize shareholders’ wealth by:

• Understanding the proper role of the Financial Manager;
• Choosing the best sources of funds for the business, and the criteria to follow in doing so;
• Appraising capital investment projects to ensure the best possible combination of risk / return to the shareholder from several alternatives;
• Managing working capital, with particular emphasis on cash and liquidity, debtors and inventory, in order to ensure the proper safeguarding of assets and the survival of the firm.
