| DESCRIPTION | Course Objective: The course is aimed at enabling students to understand the workings of the labour market. Factors affecting unemployment will be given special consideration. The role of trade unions and other institutional factors affecting labour demand and labour supply will be considered. Indicative list of topics to be covered: - Factors effecting demand and supply of labour - Investment in human capital - The determinants of wage rates - Wage differentials - Unemployment and its relation to wage setting - The role of unions in wage setting and in wage differentials - Job search theories - Recent developments in labour economics Suggested Textbooks: - Sapsford D., Tzannatos Z. The Economics of the Labour Market Macmillan 1993 - Elliott R. F. Labour Economics; A Comparative Text Mc Graw Hill 1991 Students will also be expected to read a number of journal articles related to the topics of the study unit. |
