DESCRIPTION The study-unit is designed to deal with the latest developments in monetary economics at an advanced level of theoretical analysis. The study-unit will cover topics including the role of money in the economy under different assumptions, the role of interest rates in closed and open economies, monetary policy formulation and implementation and central banking issues including monetary policy rules, prudential regulation and supervision, and independence considerations.

The study-unit will also involve a number of case studies. Among these, aspects of regional monetary integration will be tackled with particular reference to the EMU. Furthermore, issues related to financial crises are studied with particular reference to the recent developments in the Asian "tiger" economies.

The delivery of the course will be centred around the study of a number of recent papers published in top academic journals, among which those by Bernanke, Christian, Eichenbaum, Evans, Mihov and Mishkin.
