| DESCRIPTION | The study-unit will focus on understanding different theoretical approaches and their relevance to macroeconomics policy. The study-unit focuses the recent reinterpretation of macroeconomic phenomena in terms of their microeconomic fundamentals. Issues such as consumption, saving, investment, money and interest rates are viewed from a microeconomic general equilibrium framework, with the results being compared with those of traditional macroeconomic theory. The study-unit emphasises throughout the constraints facing macroeconomic growth from the internal and external sectors, together with sustainability issues. It will also focus on macroeconomic policy applications in small states. The more recent theoretical treatments of economic development are also covered. The approach adopted utilises mathematical techniques necessary to assimilate and apply the macroeconomic concepts covered in the study-unit. By the end of the courses students should be able to derive and manipulate a number of key theoretical models. Reading List - Barro, R. and Grilli, V.
