DESCRIPTION Objectives

To help students appreciate the importance of work operations for the achievement of business policy, and of the personnel responsible for their planning, implementing and controlling. The course enables one to learn a detailed modelled and structured approach with respect to the variety of objectives and roles required for effective operations management. One thus appreciates that operations management is not just applicable to technical production functions and environments, but also equally to services oriented work. Overall the course provides comprehensive theoretical instruction of practical methods and techniques which have been time-tried with success.

Content

The course introduces the nature of operating systems, definitions and the basic model. Operations functions, structures and objectives as well as operations economics and management accounting are then covered. The primary roles of capacity management, activity scheduling and inventory management are then treated. Other roles such as the location and layout of facilities, health and safety management, control of variety and value, operational performance management, ergonomics, works study, quality management and managing equipment maintenance repair and replacement are also taught.
