COURSE OVERVIEW
The provision of health care service is a complex, highly skilled activity that requires all practitioners of the multidisciplinary team to have in-depth knowledge and skills together with an ability to reflect critically on their work. Health care professions in Malta have undergone several changes in recent years. The challenge faced by nurses today is to provide the highest possible standard of care within this context. The scope of the programme is to enable qualified state registered nurses the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and skill relating to their clinical speciality. Since there are many clinical specialities, the programme will be organised according to clinical pathways. Each academic year, the Nursing department will offer a number of pathways. This programme consists of 30 credits at levels 3 and 4. There are a number of core study units that are shared across various pathways and a number of pathway specific study units that only candidates on a specific pathway may complete.

LEARNING OUTCOMES By the end of this programme, the graduate will be able to:
• Develop the breath and depth of knowledge, skills and attitudes to be able to deliver, analyze and evaluate the holistic care of patients and their families
• Use knowledge of pathophysiology to make accurate interpretation of physical assessment data
• Demonstrate knowledge that enables an assessment of the psychological and social needs of patients
• Prioritize the delivery of care for patients with various levels of health care needs
• Show an understanding of a range of assessment tools and choice of referral pathways
• Integrate information which addresses complex health related issues
• Integrate critical thinking skills in addressing complex health related issues
• Develop reflective skills
• Exercise communication skills
• Improve academic writing skills
• Manage information through effective retrieval, interpretation and utilization
• Personal organization and responsibility (including time management)
• Demonstrate a commitment to professional development

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES AND ACCESS TO FURTHER STUDY The successful completion of this certificate programme renders a candidate eligible for application for enrollment on to bachelor's programmes of studies.
