DESCRIPTION The placement is related to specific aspects of alternative service delivery. The students will be guided to plan, implement and evaluate a prevention and early intervention programme related to speech and language acquisition. The sessions will be run with a group of children and their main carers within the Teaching and Research Clinic of the FHS. The children's speech and language skills will be assessed prior to and at the end of the programme sessions.

Any progress in the children's communication skills will therefore be recorded objectively and evaluated.

The carers are guided in relation to stimulation of speech and language acquisition within the home setting.

Study-unit Aims:

To enable the student to apply the basic concepts studied in the Communication Therapy courses. The student is encouraged to discover different ways of looking at clinical challenges by using an alternative mode of service delivery as a source of data that can be dealt within a variety of ways.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- integrate all s/he has learnt during lectures and tutorials;
- assess, diagnose as well as manage children at risk of communication difficulties;
- deal with data from clients with Maltese or English as a first language or those who are simultaneously bilingual.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
- Plan and implement a specific prevention and early intervention programme related to the acquisition of speech and language skills;
- assess and evaluate children at risk of communication difficulties;
- provide guidance related to the stimulation of speech and language development to carers of children;
- manage effectively challenging behaviour of children.
