DESCRIPTION This study-unit is interprofessional in its philosophy and its delivery. This is in line with the global trend to incorporate interprofessional learning into healthcare education. Candidates from various health professions are brought together to develop awareness of educational principles, to develop supervisory skills and to appreciate different approaches to clinical supervision, enhancing learning in clinical practice. To enhance and guarantee crossover of ideas, perspectives and discussion amongst participants, each Department will ideally take in an equal number of students. Various platforms will be used to ensure participation and communication between candidates of different professional backgrounds. These include seminars, workshops, online debates, problem solving and placement.

Study-unit Aims:

The aims of the study-unit are to enable the candidate to provide quality supervision and mentoring to students during clinical practice; to enable the candidate to develop an insight into clinical supervision and mentorship in light of current changes in health and higher education; to equip the candidate with teaching and assessing skills relevant to their role in supporting students of the health professions in clinical environments.

Learning Outcomes:

1. Knowledge & Understanding:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a) identify key players in the clinical education setting;
b) analyze the qualities that are needed for the successful fulfilment of role of the supervisor or mentor;
c) appreciate the different ways in which adult learners and supervisors interact;
d) adopt a pragmatic approach to ensure that clinical supervision is performed in meaningful ways within the student's practice environment.

2. Skills:

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:
a) apply broad clinical education principles to the practice setting;
b) select and critically review appropriate learning methods and models of supervision and deliver feedback in a constructive manner;
c) create a favourable learning environment for the student;
d) critically analyse student's professional skills based on his/her level of learning.
